THE GOLDEN SNAIL
Raden Putra was married to a princess named Dewi Limaran. One day when Dewi Limaran was walking in the palace garden, she saw a snail among her lovely flowers. She had one of her servants pick it up and throw it away. The snail was actually an old witch who had disguised herself as a snail. The witch was very angry, so she cursed Dewi Limaran and changed her into a golden snail and threw it into the river. Then the stream carried it far away from the palace.
On the side of a big forest, there lived a poor widow, mbok Randa Dadapan. Every day she went fishing for her living. One day it was a particularly bad day as she couldn’t catch any fish. Again and again she threw her net, but nothing could she get. At last she pulled the net and went home. There she saw a shiny thing at the bottom of the net. “What is that?” she asked in her mind. It was a golden snail. She picked it up and took it home.

“Where should I put it? O, let me put it in this pot”, and she put the golden snail in a terracotta pot. She then went to bed and soon was fast asleep as she was very tired. The next morning when she woke up, she found to her amazement that the floor had been swept clean. There was some food on the table. “Who has brought all these?” she wondered who had done that. She thought she was dreaming but she was not. She thought and thought but couldn’t think of anybody who could have been so generous to her. That happened again and again.
Some days passed, she then got an idea. The next morning she took her basket and went out as usual, but shortly she returned and hid somewhere outside her home. Suddenly she heard a soft movement inside the terracotta pot and saw the snail creeping out of it. It grew bigger and bigger and in a moment later a lovely young girl stood where the snail had been. The empty shell fell to the ground behind her. Quickly the young girl swept the floor. Then she took rice, vegetables, meat, eggs and so on out of the pot and began cooking.
The old woman saw all this; she noticed that the girl lived under a spell. She then tried to break it. She took the empty shell and threw it into the river.
“Who are you, dear pretty girl? You’re very kind to me.”, asked mbok Randa Dadapan to the girl.
“I’m Dewi Limaran. A witch had cursed me into a snail. Thank you, Mbok. You have thrown the shell so the witch’s spell has been broken”. Then Dewi Limaran lived with mbok Randa Dadapan for many years.
As while, Raden Putra’s father, the King asked him to look for another woman to marry with. Raden Putra refused it as she could not forget his wife, Dewi Limaran. Then, Raden Putra asked his father to search for his wife. He wandered from one place to another, from a town to another town, from a village to another village, going into a forest and out of it. Months he left the palace but he had not found his wife. He kept going to search for his wife.
One day Raden Putra had a rest near a river. He saw a girl passing by to the river and an old woman walked behind her. “Hey, she really looks like my wife!” he whispered. “Let me follow her.” So then, raden Putra walked towards the old woman.
“Mbok, is the girl your daughter?” Raden Putra asked her.
“O, no. she is Dewi Limaran …” the old woman answered.
“Dewi Limaran? “Raden Putra shouted in happiness and at that time the girl looked round at them. Her eyes widened.
“Raden Putra?”
At last Raden Putra found his beloved wife. Then he took her wife and Mbok Randa Dadapan to the palace. And they lived happily ever after.
