SIMPLE PAST TENSE

Untuk memahami teks Narrative dan Recount, marilah kita  pahami kalimat yang digunakan pada kedua teks tersebut yaitu Simple Past Tense. Simple Past Tense adalah kalimat yang kita gunakan untuk mengungkapkan peristiwa/kejadian/kegiatan yang telah lewat/lampau (past). Pada Bahasa Inggris untuk menunjukkan waktu selain keterangan waktu (adverb of time), juga bentuk kata kerja (verb). Simple Past Tense menggunakan kata kerja bentuk kedua (KK II/past verb/preterite).
Keterangan Waktu: yesterday (kemaren), just now (baru saja), last ... (... lalu), ... ago (... yang lalu), once upon a time (pada jaman dahulu), once (konon).

Perhatikan kalimat - kalimat berikut.
1. My mother cooked chicken soup yesterday.
2. Father washed the car this morning.
3. I ironed the clothes last night.
4. Mr. Dadang taught us last Tuesday.
5. We borrowed books in the library.
6. Bono and Tono played badminton two days ago.
7. The cat caught two mice yesterday.
8. Someone stole my helmet last week.

ANA KUCING ING NGISOR MEJA.

Pembuka kalimat "Ana ...." pada Bahasa Jawa ataupun "Ada ..." pada Bahasa Indonesia juga kita jumpai pada Bahasa Inggris. Ungkapan tersebut untuk menjelaskan KEBERADAAN suatu benda.
Pada Bahasa Inggris kita kenal dengan INTRODUCTORY THERE, yang berpadanan dengan kedua ungkapan di atas. Pada Bahasa Inggris kita harus memperhatikan jumlah benda yang dijelaskan.
There is + Singular Nouns (Kata Benda Tunggal) dan There are + Plural Nouns (Kata Benda Jamak).

Ada seekor kucing di bawah meja.
There is a cat under the table.

Ada beberapa buku di dalam kotak ini.
There are some books in the box.

Apakah banyak mobil di tempat parkir?
Are there many cars in the parking lot?

Apakah ada sebuah sungai di dekat rumah itu?
Is there a river near the house?

Tidak ada bintang - bintang di langit malam ini.
There are not any stars in the sky tonight.
There are no stars in the sky tonight.

Tidak ada anjing di halaman depan.
There is not a dog in the front yard.
